Abstract

Australia’s current level of engagement with the UN human rights system is perhaps unprecedented. We have two representatives on human rights treaty bodies and two experts serving on mandates of the Human Rights Council. All four of these individuals are women and on the world stage, we have presented ourselves as a leader in advancing gender equality. This paper interrogates this self-image by looking at our international engagement and considering the way it is reflected at home.
