Abstract
The $``{2}_{1}^{+}$ anomaly'' in vibrational nuclei is studied in the context of alternate vibrational potentials. It is shown that a better reproduction of phonon and multiphonon multiplet energy centroids in vibrational nuclei is obtained with potentials having a strong quartic $(V\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\beta}}^{4})$ component.
