Abstract
We continue to enjoy the discussions that accompany case reports; however, we are concerned with the interpretations drawn by Cohn et al. 1 Cohn JA Skorpinski E Cohn JR Prevention of pneumococcal infection in a patient with normal immunoglobulin levels but impaired polysaccharide antibody production. Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol. 2006; 97: 603-605 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (5) Google Scholar Briefly, the authors describe a 71-year-old woman with emphysema and recurrent upper and lower respiratory tract infections. The reported immune workup consisted of normal serum immunoglobulin levels and prevaccination and postvaccination titers after the patient's third pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination (PPV); however, no other pertinent results, such as protein vaccine responses, flow cytometry measures, T-cell proliferation, complement levels, and immunoglobulin subclasses, were provided.
