Abstract

Arterial blood gas is the fastest and most effective test to report the pulmonary gas exchange and acid-base balance, thus being an indispensable diagnostic tool in emergencies. The main indication of arterial blood gases is the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment monitoring of respiratory failure. The parameters measured in arterial blood gas analysis are: arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) dioxide, and pH. You can also obtain derived values that are important to the clinic: concentration of bicarbonate (HCO3–), alveolar-arterial oxygen difference and oxygen saturation.
