Abstract

Powder X-ray diffraction, low temperature electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been made on new ternary cerium transition metal borides CeT 6B 4 (≡ Ce 0.5T 3B 2) with the La 1- x Rh 3B 2-type structure, where T can be Ru, Rh or Ir. No isostructural compounds were found for T = Fe, Co, Ni, Os, Pd or Pt. Structural effect (disorder/vacancy) on valence fluctuations in these cerium compounds is discussed. These results, together with other results from ternary rare earth rhodium compounds RE 0.5Rh 3B 2 (RE = La to Lu, Y, Th), show interesting interplay among structural chemistry, valence fluctuations and long range magnetic order.
