Abstract

A novel polymeric zinc(II) complex of a double betaine with a rigid tris(ethylene) bridge between a pair of quaternary nitrogen atoms, namely [{Zn(L) 2} n ](ClO 4) 2n [L = O 2CCH 2CH 2N +(CH 2CH 2) 3N +CH 2CH 2CO 2], has been prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography. The zinc(II) atom is eight-coordinated by four short Zn-O(carboxylato) bonds ranging from 2.044(2) to 2.064(3)and four long Zn-O(carboxylato) bonds ranging from 2.631(3) to 2.665(3)in a distorted dodecahedral environment. The crystal structure of the complex comprises mutually interpenetrating coordination networks constructed of zinc(II) atoms and L ligands, with the intervening space filled by discrete perchlorate groups.
