Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the international concerns on developmental issues on energy conservation and renewable energies. The first international energy forum, ENERGEX '82, held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, in August 1982 was attended by delegates from 55 countries. The role of Canada in assisting developing countries in the development of energy conservation and renewable energies was one of the topics of discussion. The delegates, especially those coming from developing countries, were interested to know how links could be established with Canadian institutions and how Canadian financial assistance can be secured. Consequently, a project to evaluate the effective means and methods by which Canada and its institutions working in the areas of energy conservation and renewable energy could assist developing countries was submitted to Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The main objectives of the project were to find the most cost-effective ways to meet the energy needs of developing countries through development of renewable energies and energy conservation, and to evaluate the potential of cooperation with Canadian institutes in the development of renewable energies and energy conservation To achieve these objectives, on-site evaluations were carried out in countries. In addition, a written questionnaire was forwarded to non government organizations in developed and developing countries, and to applied research institutes in developing countries. The chapter presents a preliminaryanalysis of the results of the survey of only the research institutes.
