Abstract
Over the past 25 years, the University of Arizona Environmental Research Laboratory has developed and tested concepts for efficient food, power and water production and conservation techniques. Recently, habitat has been added to this list in an effort to better understand and demonstrate how to improve the quality of life of arid land inhabitants. In order to consolidate these community concepts, an experiment/demonstration facility called the “Solar Oasis” has been constructed at the Environmental Research Laboratory. The components of the solar oasis include energy efficient housing, public space, food production, landscape, water harvesting and power generation. By integrating these components, a selective filter is being developed which mediates between human needs and the harsh desert environment. This model is an important tool for demonstrating the potential integration of these concepts into viable urban or community settings. Through the oasis experiment, approaches to understanding how to adapt current land use practices into a more ecologically appropriate future are discussed.
