Abstract
While it is widely acknowledged that internal communication is a vital component of organizational effectiveness, it is too often viewed in a simplistic, ill‐defined manner. Clarity around the concept provides a foundation for effective communication strategies that meet the needs of employees as well as strategic managers. This entry outlines dimensions of internal communication; highlights the role of internal corporate communication in facilitating communication between senior managers and employees; and examines strategic internal communication planning. Issues relating to internal communication content and methods are discussed, underpinned with overviews of theories that provide insight into communication needs and processes. Workplace communication challenges are considered, including: enabling employee voice; contributing to employee engagement; providing effective change communication; blurred boundaries between internal and external communication; and evaluation, research methodology, and theory. Practical issues include the roles of practitioners, the organizational position of the service, and the education needs of strategic internal communication professionals.
