Abstract
The article examines the state of modern technology, which operates in conditions of limited resources and reduced quality of maintenance. The aging of the fl eet of machines and mechanisms (MTP) is described, accompanied by an outfl ow of qualifi ed specialists from the fi eld of technical operation and an increase in prices for spare parts and technical means of mechanization (TSM), which forces owners of equipment to rely more and more on their own strength in diagnostics and preventive maintenance. This trend implies a shift from traditional diagnostic methods that require expensive equipment and specialized knowledge to simpler, but no less eff ective organoleptic methods based on visual inspection, analysis of sound characteristics and assessment of subjective feelings of the operator
