Abstract

It is hypothesized that all elementary particles possess abstract internal variables of a two-dimensional Bose oscillator and a two-dimensional Fermi oscillator, and these variables are used to define internal quantum numbers for the particles. Restrictions on admissible physical states force the conclusion that only 8 quantum states are physically possible. In order to incorporate these results into field theory, the baryon octet is represented by a Dirac field that depends on the internal quantum numbers and on space-time. Similarly, the mesons are represented by a pseudoscalar field. The formulations of these fields as 8 x 1 column matrices are shown. These formulations are used in an analysis of the symmetry properties of strong interactions of elementary particles. (T.F.H.)
