Abstract
This chapter shows a bi-national researcher team can improve the quality of interactions with the actors of bi-national organisations during the different steps of the research process. Field research in multinational organizations is increasingly carried out by intercultural teams or tandems in which at least one member comes from the country or countries of the organizations or actors studied. For (multicultural) research teams, an increased reflexivity is required to control the quality of the field research process. The two authors of this chapter, one German scholar and one French, discuss the intercultural challenges of binational and bilingual research tandems on the basis of their field research project experiences in French-German organizations. They use the notion of ‘rapport’ and discuss the dimensions of ‘rapport management’ to analyze the interaction and communication between researchers and case field actors, and to identify the mechanisms of trust and relationship development. They provide recommendations to manage rapport in intercultural research situations and to reflect on data collected from field actors during the research process.
