Abstract

A procedure is presented for the “exact” analysis of plates forming box sections subject to generalised loading. The numerical method used in the formulation, dynamic relaxation, is described in some detail. Emphasis is placed on the modifications necessary to extend the method beyond the form already used for isolated panel analyses. The equilibrium and compatibility requirements for complete interaction at the adjoining edges of plates are presented and their incorporation into the present formulation is considered. The influence of mesh size is studied and comparisons are made with isolated panel results. The simplifying assumptions concerning edge interaction adopted by earlier workers are validated for axial loading and some results are presented for a square column under axial loading in which the effect of varying the flange plate thickness and of the mode and magnitude of plate initial deformations is considered.
