Abstract
In nuclear emulsions 1226 interactions of 27 GeV and 20.5 GeV protons were found in a systematic way by track following. The mean free path is (35.1 ±1.5) cm at 27 GeV and (35.6± 1.5) cm at 20.5 GeV. A list of the type of all interactions(N h ,N s ) is presented. A survey about the mean number of heavily ionizing tracks(N h ) and of shower particles(N s ) is given as a function of primary energyE. Between 1 GeV and 30 GeV we find for collisions in nuclear emulsions: = = 0.65(Ekin/GeV)0.7. Castagnoli’s method to estimate the primary energy from the angular distribution of the shower particles was applied to interactions withN h ≤ 1. The true energy is overestimated by a factor, which increases with decreasing multiplicity Ns. The interactions were separated into those on C, N, O target nuclei and those on Ag, Br target nuclei. At a primary energy of 24 GeV we found the following dependence of the mean number of shower particles on the atomic numberA = 3.4-A0.14±0.03. This is consistent with the hydrodynamic theory of multiple meson-production, but also with calculations assuming an intranuclear cascade. There are significant differences in the correlationN h vs. N s for the two groups of target nuclei.
