Abstract

Background and Aims: Acute and chronic stress and depression are risk factors of myocardial infarction (MI). Macrophage inhibitory factor (MIF) – pleotropic proinflammatory cytokine. High level of MIF promotes rupture of atherosclerotic plaque and development of MI. This is cytokine with neuroendocrinic properties which appears to be the link between atherosclerosis and depression. Aim: to investigate associations between MIF and anxiety, depression and stress in patients with ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI).
