Abstract

A many-body description of photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra is given for strongly correlated d-electron materials in the presence of s-d hybridization, with specific application to the epitaxial monolayer of Ni on Cu(001). Results of local-density-approximation calculations are used as the starting point. Interactions most generally allowed by atomic symmetry are introduced. Anomalous transfer of spectral weight in the Ni/Cu(001) system is found to be driven by strong local interactions and modified by the s-d hybridization. The physical implications of the calculated results are discussed in a full many-body picture
