Abstract

We study the torsion of a composite rod of a nonpiezoelectric semiconductor core coated within a piezoelectric dielectric shell. A one-dimensional model is established using the macroscopic theory of piezoelectric semiconductors. An analytical solution is obtained, showing explicitly that the mobile charges in the rod redistribute themselves axially under torsion. Hence, the composite rod exhibits axial piezotronic coupling. This suggests the possibility of new piezotronic devices operating with torsion, in addition to the existing devices based on extension and bending of beams.
