Abstract
Abstract Techniques enabling the intensive culture of walleye fry (Stizostedion vitreum) to fingerling size were developed. Initial steps involved rearing fry on live food in vertical upwelling and modified rectangular units for 30 d with a mean survival of 14.6 and 7.8%, respectively. Dispersal of fry in rearing units and initial loading rate appeared to be two variables affecting fry survival. Walleyes were reared intensively under three different feeding regimens. Those fed formulated diets survived a maximum of 39 d, even though significant numbers ingested the food particles; these fish failed to inflate their swim bladders. Walleyes fed brine shrimp and then converted to formulated diets, and those fed brine shrimp and zooplankton followed by conversion to formulated diets demonstrated a 3.9 and 6.0% survival through 65 d.
