Abstract

Bowyer and Field1 have disputed the diffuse background flux of soft X-rays reported by us2. They object to our calculation of field of view (in a paper at the December 1968 meeting of the American Astronomical Society); to our allowance for “background” counts; and to our use of 21 cm hydrogen measurements, and corresponding X-ray absorption coefficients, rather than the substantially lower effective absorption coefficient which they deduced3 from measurements of the galactic soft X-ray absorption. We wish to reply to these criticisms.
