Abstract

The centrosymmetric two-dimensional material bilayer graphene (BLG) does not show dipole-allowed second-harmonic generation (SHG) in its pristine form. However, the symmetry can be broken by applying an electric field perpendicular to the layer. Here, we present a theoretical study of SHG from biased BLG. We show that the sheet second-harmonic susceptibility reaches very large values of several hundred ${\mathrm{nm}}^{2}$/V in the midinfrared region. The SHG is tunable depending on the strength of the electric field. Furthermore, a strong, tunable double resonance appears in the spectrum. We believe that this study could spark interest in the nonlinear optical properties of biased BLG.
