Abstract

Since 2017, Yangon Regional Government has been reformed its bus system to reduce the commute time and to improve the people's well-being. In the past, each bus was operated by two staffs - a driver and a conductor. The conductor not only collected fare but also provided information about the bus stops and the route. The new system, however, has only a driver and passengers have to send fare into a fare collector box which is mounted on board near the driver. There is no announcement system about the bus stops and the route on board. This causes many passengers especially the locals from other cities/states and tourists face difficulties. To eliminate this problem, an intelligent vehicle monitoring and passenger information system is proposed in this paper. The proposed system reads GPS information to provide both audio and visual announcements. The route and bus stops data are stored in a SD card. PIC microcontroller is served as the main computing unit in the proposed system. For traffic management and vehicle control purpose, the proposed system also transmit the location information to the monitoring and control station every 30 seconds. GPS signal loss condition is also taken into account in the system design. Both indoor tests and road test have been carried out in order to evaluate the reliability and robustness of the proposed system.
