Abstract

This chapter presents a summary of work on a project that combines computer aided instruction (CAI) and artificial intelligence (AI). The result of this combination forms the field of intelligent computer aided instruction (ICAI). The AI is defined as the part of computer science concerned with designing intelligent computer systems. Its parts are embedded in the study of mathematical logic. At present, there are many areas of investigation in AI that range from cognitive processes to natural language processing. One of the sub-areas under investigation is expert systems. The expert systems range over topics as diverse as structural analysis to medical diagnosis. The premise of these expert systems is that they work from a set of rules derived from the process being modeled. These rules allow the expert system to analyze facts and form inferences and conclusions or to probe for more information. Along with the development of expert systems for commercial applications, expert systems can also be applied to the field of education.
