INTEGRATION: THE KEY TO SECOND GENERATION APPLICATIONS

Abstract

We have developed several successful applications involving rulebased expert systems. Using these previous systems as case studies, we identify a number of critical lessons learned for successful applications. These lessons clearly highlight where the gap is between research in second generation diagnostic expert systems and successful applications. They develop an agenda of further areas that must be investigated. One of the major themes of these lessons is the importance of integration with the existing working environment and existing systems.
