Abstract

Unsafe sexual behaviors increase risk of unwanted pregnancies and HIV infection. There is remarkably limited empirical evidence available in Ethiopia about integration of HIV services and abortion services. To assess integration of HIV services within post abortion care and associated factors of induced abortion in eastern zone. An institutional based cross sec- tional study was conducted, among women who came for abortion services in the selected governmental health institutions of eastern zone of Tigray. A structured and pre tested questionnaires was prepared and filled through trained interviewers and supervisors. Data was entered and analyzed using SPSS version 16.132 (46.8 %) women had history of previous pregnancy, out of which, 35(26.5%) reported one or more previous history of abortion. Regarding post abortion FP services, 158(56%) women reported that they have got contraceptive counseling and 150 (53.2%) women mentioned that they desired HIV testing before leaving the health facility, however, 98(34.8%) had got HIV counseling and 46 (16.3%) post abortion women accepted and tested for HIV. After adjusting; previous use of modern contraceptive during the index pregnancy persisted to be signifi- cantly associated with provision of post abortion FP methods (P-Value< 0.05). This study indicated that FP services were par- tially integrated within abortion care and the opportunity to provide VCT/PIHCT service was often missed or underutilized. Therefore; brief counseling on post abortion FP and HIV services based on scientific counseling principles and adequate time of counseling should be emphasized.
