Abstract

The clothing industry is widely considered for developing countries as the first step of industrialization and integration into global value chains. Given its importance, this chapter presents the main features of the clothing industry including recent developments on its global value chain and the production cycle oriented towards the fast fashion. With regard to developing countries, this chapter presents the data centric approach to evaluate the integration of emerging economies into global value chains of the clothing industry. Time series analysis on data sets from EORA, ICIO, and World Integrated Solutions are examined to identify the key determinants to facilitate a higher degree of participation in international trade. A special focus in this chapter is given to the Western Balkan region.
