Abstract
Over a period of time software engineering has developed rules and tools to cope with problems of productivity and correctness but their mapping onto real-time software design environment is not always an easy task. More specifically the benefits of high-level languages apply equally well to programming for control applications, but in time critical applications the classical debugging methods of adding debug code or using an in-circuit emulator are quite useless since they slow down execution. Among the various hardware ectensions necessary to transform a simple logic state analyser into one that can be used efficiently on compiled high-level language code in real-time environment, the part that traces local variables on the stack can be shown to need a VLSI implementation to make the whole economically feasible. The necessary for, and the design of, a local variable module will be presented, together with the development of design automation tools for the integration of such a circuit.
