Integrating libraries, archives, museums and art galleries with Linked Data: initiatives study

Abstract

Introduction The strategic use of technologies in libraries, archives, museums and art galleries can advance various products and services, offering users a better experience with access to information. Also, technologies can be used to broaden the possibilities of accessing, locating and retrieving resources in information systems, such as catalogs and research tools. For this reason, these information centers need to seek innovations and reflect in an environment with improvements to users, in addition to informational treatment with their information resources. Thus, the objective of this work is to present International and Brazilian initiatives that seek to integrate libraries, archives, museums and art galleries in relation to the descriptive content of each documentary context. Methods The work is characterized by qualitative and exploratory research, as it seeks to familiarize and analyze the Linked data initiatives between libraries, archives, museums and art galleries and their development. For the localization of these documents (dissertations, theses, articles, events, scientific reports and books) the databases were used: Reference database of journal articles in Information Science (BRAPCI), CAPES journals, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Web of Science, in the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and dissertations (BDTD). This study has been selected that address the integration of the description among the informational units, in addition to texts deemed relevant to clarify this work. Main results The concern for cultural heritage data is growing, especially with the processes of publishing, linking and curating such data. (KIRCHHOFF; SCHWEIBENZ; SIEGLERSCHMIDT, 2008; NOVIA, 2012, VAN HOOLAND; VERBORGH, 2014). Therefore, one of the initiatives is the Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives and Museums (LODLAM) because they involve three institutions with the possibilities of open data binding practices (Linked Open Data – LOD). The LODLAM movement was initiated in 2011 as an event and there were four editions to the moment, focusing on the practices of the Linked Open Data, as addressed by Voss (2012). Moreover, the purpose of bringing together conceptual structures of libraries, archives and museums is reiterated by Simionato (2015) with the conceptual model Digital images for Libraries, Archives and Museums (DILAM). Another initiative is the harmonization of FRBR with CIDOC CRM, which consists of promoting interoperability of cultural heritage information with the objective of [....] provide common language for heterogeneous information systems, and enable integration, despite possible semantic and structural incompatibilities. (CARRASCO; TALLER; VIDOTTI, 2015, p. 212). In addition to the LODLAM, there is a movement that comprises art galleries as is the case of the initiative Linked Open Data Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum (LODGLAM). In this context, to provide and preserve the cultural heritage of the European countries, Europeana, which is a digital library that gathers several collections and its availability from various European countries. This context, standardize and create a minimum structure of description of these resources, a model called Europeana Data Model (EDM). The Europeana It is also related to the OPENGLM - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and MuseumIt promotes the use and open access of cultural heritage. The OPENGLM is an initiative founded by the European Commission and coordinated by the Open Knowledge. (ARAKAKI, 2016). In the American context, cooperation efforts between libraries and museums are the Digital Public Library America (LAPD), a digital library that aggregates metadata for various types of informational resources around the United States and used as the basis of its application profile LAPD Metadata Application Profile (MAP) The EDM. This reinforces the importance of Europeana in the process of integrating informational resources into various systems. Conclusions In this way, with the increasingly intense flow of information, professionals need tools that provide the reuse of data to avoid the rework of the professional and the representation of resources, as is happening in the states. United and Europe. Consequently, the insertion of the principles of Linked Data, they are set up in proposals for cooperation between libraries, archives, museums and art galleries that play a crucial role in the dissemination of information. Finally, it is considered that efforts to integrate libraries, museums archives, and art galleries are crucial to providing a connected environment and broadening users ' navigation possibilities. The use of the principles of the Linked Data to enhance the discovery of informational resources in catalogs, promoting access to new features in other digital information environments.
