Abstract

In the past years, engineering culture has been undergoing a rethinking process towards a sustainable attitude. A technical conscience of remote damages is called for by political, societal as well as industrial parties. Engineers are in a key position to implement ecological concerns into products as well as processes and to open up new business fields by exploiting ecological technologies. Tomorrow's engineers need to be prepared for this challenge by gathering practical experience as a supplement to profound technical knowledge. The Institute fur Werkzeugmaschinen and Fabrikbetrieb (IWF Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Management) is part of an initiative to integrate project work in teams into the German education system. By working on industrial projects, students develop a broad set of competences and a conscience towards sustainable engineering as the example of our student project Planning of a Biogas Facility shows.
