Abstract

A boundary element approach to the coupled seepage and convective dispersion problem known as a mathematical model for seawater intrusion in a confined coastal aquifer is developed in order to simulate saltwater wedge phenomena. The nonlinear integral equations corresponding to the coupled system of seepage flow and salt transport equations are derived for both steady and unsteady problems. The related fundamental solution is determined from a differential operator of the linearized system. The method proposed herein is applied to both steady state and transient analyses of the well known Henry's problem. Numerical simulation results are compared with previously published results in order to verify our solution method.
