Abstract

Abstract Nigerian Universities seem to be so conscious of the tremendous roles they claim to perform that little attempt is made to find out what they have actually achieved. This study was designed to investigate the role of Nigerian Universities in performance of their institutional objectives which are spelt out in the National Policy on Education. The results of the study reveal that the performances in three of the objectives fall short of expectations. These are the objectives of teaching, research and dissemination of information. Storage of knowledge, the fourth objective considered in the study has been realised. But it is questionable whether the knowledge stored by Nigerian Universities is relevant to the development of the country. That seems to be a possible area for further research.
