Abstract

We developed equipment to install tipping anchors in rocky soils, for guylines and tailholds of cable loggingequipment. The installation device consisted of a commercially-available pneumatic rotary-percussion drill, accessoriesand a custom lightweight support frame. The equipment is powered by a 5 m3/min (185 standard cfm) compressor and thecomponents can be hand-carried to off-road anchoring sites located within 60 m (200 ft) of the compressor. This distanceis limited by pressure losses in the air hose connecting the compressor and drill. Installation times per anchor, includingpreparing the equipment, drilling a 75 mm (3 in.) pilot hole and driving the anchor to a depth of approximately 3 m(10 ft), averaged 70 min for a crew of two relatively inexperienced people.
