Abstract

The physical nature of a previously investigated non-equilibrium phase transition in a system of N two-level atoms interacting with a strong em field and described by the Dicke hamiltonian is discussed. Using a dressed atom representation, the phase transition is related to an instability arising because of the high degeneracy of one of the subspaces of the hamiltonian and a pictorial representation for this instability is obtained.
