Abstract
(In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum wells and self-formed quantum dots have been grown on smooth and rough substrate surfaces. Photoluminescence experiments indicate that the quantum dots are insensitive to substrate roughness whereas the quantum wells are adversely affected by the roughness. These results show the robustness of quantum dots over quantum wells for optical device applications.
