Abstract
Professor Devonshire from Rothamsted (UK) has joined CSIRO Entomology (Australia) for 12 months to work on a special case of organophosphate pesticide bioremediation, using insect enzymes. ‘Our work has shown that resistant insects have developed the ability to break down the harmful chemicals in insecticide sprays. If we can produce larger quantities of these enzymes in a form which can be sprayed or applied in the field, residues of the harmful chemicals can also be broken down.’ he says. Pesticide biochemistry is an area of broad and ongoing mutual interest both with CSIRO and with other Australian agricultural research institutions.
