Abstract

This work is the first in a series that presents the results of a nutritional survey in a population group in the city of São Paulo. In the beginning we listed some general considcrations about this type of survey. Clinicai examinations were done on 4,208 individuais who came to the Health Centers of São Paulo only in the capacity of accompanying patients. The chief characteristics of this population group are described in Tables I, 11, Ill, IV, V and VI. We relate in this paper the indispensable standardizations taken in the survey. A team consisting of physicians, trained in the clinicai concepts of nutritional deficiencies, i. e. signs, and symptoms; health educators, and technicians also trained in standard laboratory tests, assisted. A special clinicai record card was used for each person. ( See page 205A and 205B for type). The laboratory tests ma de on about 10% of the group included: Hemoglobin, Red cells count, Total Serum Protein, Alkaline phosphatase in serum, Ascorbic acid in whole blood, thiamine, riboflavine and creatinine in the urine, as well as biophotometric tests (Vitamin A) and parasitological examinations of the teces.
