Abstract

BackgroundSupporting acquisition of diverse and complex competencies implicit in nurse practitioner (NP) education requires innovative strategies which connect didactic knowledge and advanced clinical practice. MethodsFaculty collaboration led to the development and implementation of an innovative pediatric focused simulation. ResultsThis novel simulation supported attainment of core, population and specialty competencies in conjunction with the advanced-level Essentials competencies among diverse NP student learners. ConclusionTo balance the challenges of workload, budgets, distance education and student numbers with opportunities for active learning strategies which support student competency attainment, nursing faculty must re-envision and leverage existing resources. Strategies for low-resource simulations which can be adapted for increasing complexity across the curriculum offer unique opportunities.
