Abstract
Abstract The main theme of the article is the relationship between the internal and external worlds as shown in the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of a young gay man of racially mixed parentage who was seriously sexually, physically and emotionally abused in childhood. It shows how the patient's clinical material was used to link the inner and outer worlds and pays particular attention to the Kleinian concepts of projective identification and container/contained.
