Abstract
The article is devoted to controversial aspects that are associated with the period of M. Dragomanov’s life as a teacher at St. Volodymyr University in Kiev. The main attention is paid to the details of his master's thesis defense, regarding which the reviewers' points of view did not coincide, as well as to the peculiarities of his teaching style and innovation. It is emphasized on his unwillingness to bow before any authority, which was the main reason for his dismissal from the university
