Abstract

Hair loss, or alopecia, occurs in up to 50% of people in their lifetime. Understanding the hair growth cycle is crucial to evaluating hair loss in women and helping them understand the expected course and treatment. Three categories of hair loss are discussed, with the most common presentations of each illustrated. Systemic disorders associated with hair loss and infectious processes and medications are also examined. Identifying and treating underlying medical conditions or removing trigger medications, trauma, or illness will reinstate hair growth without added intervention.
