Abstract

A number of studies indicate that tea extracts are effective in reducing caries in humans as well as in animals. The present experiments demonstrated the inhibition of salivary amylase activity by extracts of a commercial tea. Inhibition was dependent on the tea : saliva ratio so that, in vivo, conditions may permit optimal inhibition during and immediately after tea ingestion. The effect on salivary amylase may contribute significantly to reducing the cariogenicity of starch-containing foods.
