Abstract

Antisera to hog pancreatic amylase and human salivary amylase have been prepared by injection of the enzymes into the rabbit, rooster, rat and goat. These antisera will inhibit the enzymatic properties of the amylases used as antigens and show certain cross reactions with the amylases of other animals. Whereas in general both the salivary and pancreatic amylases of a given species are inhibited equally by a given antiserum, the liver amylase is not inhibited at all or to a much lesser degree. This indicates that the salivary and pancreatic amylases of a given animal may be identical but that the liver amylase is structurally different from the others. The inhibition of serum amylase was less than that of the corresponding salivary and pancreatic amylases.
