Abstract

Abstract The infrared spectra of n-alkoxy ethanols CH3(CH2)nO-CH2-CH2-OH with n=13,15,17,19 and 21 have been obtained in the solid and liquid states as well as in solution. From a study of the CH2 rocking modes of the (O–CH2-CH2-O) group at 893 cm−1 and 864 cm−1 during liquid-solid transformation and from the solution spectra in the hydroxyl-stretching region, it has been shown that this group exists predominantly in a gauche configuration in liquids or in solution, while both gauche and trans configurations are present in the solid state.
