Abstract

One of the greatest limitations on the field of gradient index optics is a lack of technology for making gradient index materials. This is true not only for materials used in the visible portion of the spectrum, but also in the infrared. The current techniques of manufacturing gradient index materials in the visible include various ion exchange techniques, chemical vapor deposition and ion stuffing. Some of these techniques are also feasible using infrared materials. Work is being done within the Gradient Index Group at the University of Rochester to investigate the fabrication of infrared gradient index materials using the techniques of Czochralski crystal growth. This technique can be used to form alloys of two or more similar crystalline materials into gradient index material. Current work has been centered around the use of germanium and silicon.
