Abstract

Awareness of the value of historical neighbourhoods in China's cities is growing. But how can they be successfully integrated in forward‐looking plans for urban development? URBANUS, a design practice and think‐tank based in Beijing and Shenzhen, has been leading the way in finding architectural solutions to the country's urban challenges. Hui Wang, one of its co‐founders, profiles URBANUS's approach through three recent projects that have injected new life, diversity and community cohesion into one of Beijing's hutong districts.
