Abstract

Interviews with five former International Mathematical Olympiad winners were analyzed to determine how various aspects of their schooling influenced their academic development and ability. The influential factors include school administrations, teachers, peers, and participation in mathematics competitions and clubs. Participation in mathematics clubs was found to be most influential on their academic development in mathematics because of the peer interaction. Teacher influences were identified as both positive and negative because some encouraged their students’ achievement and talents, whereas others were not focused on the students’ interests or developmental needs. The school system or administration was a positive influence when flexibility allowed younger students to participate in competitions. Educators are urged to recognize various influences identified through this study.
