Abstract

A bit-error rate floor for DPSK heterodyne optical systems is evaluated, considering the actual shape of the emission line of single-mode semiconductor lasers. Considering a strictly Lorentzian shape can give rise to relevant errors in the design of the above systems. An ‘equivalent linewidth’ is introduced which, when accounted for in the formalism usually adopted, allows the correct results to be obtained.
