Abstract

The electromagnetic (EM) wave generated from partial discharge (PD) in power transformers is reflected, scattered, and attenuated during propagation due to the complex internal components. Therefore, it is very important to study the characteristics of EM wave considering the influence of typical structures of power transformers. In this paper, the influence of windings and iron core on the characteristics of EM wave both in time domain and frequency domain was studied using FDTD algorithm. Four kinds of PD patterns (void discharge, corona discharge, suspending discharge, and oil clearance discharge) were considered as the discharge source. It is found that the sum of spectrum amplitude in different frequency section is greatly related to the PD pattern and the propagation distance of the EM wave, which was verified by the experiment and has been applied as a valuable parameter to distinguish PD pattern in different locations. The results are helpful for understanding PD features of ultra-high frequency (UHF) detection for power transformers, and also supplies a significant reference for PD identification in field application.
