Abstract

Summary Osmotic potentials (Ψπ) of aerated nutrient solutions were reduced to −2 atm with NaCl to evaluate comparative effects on the growth of two plum clones. Growth of Myrobolan 3-J (Prunus cerasifera) but not Marianna 2624 (P. cerasifera EHRH . X P. munsoniana Wight and Hedr .?) was reduced significantly and may be related to the observed accumulation of Na in Myro 3-J leaves. Nitrate uptake was reduced to a much greater extent by NaCl than mannitol at iso-osmotic concentrations (−4.4 and −6.4 atm) indicating specific ion effects rather than osmotic effects per se Salinization with NaCl increased the nitrate compensation point (NCP) of both clones.
