Abstract

This work reports the results gathered from the consolidation of nickel aluminide (NiAl) intermetallics via spark plasma sintering (SPS) using different processing parameters. Two samples were fabricated and compared, one at a sintering temperature of 1000 ℃ for a dwell time of 7 min and the other at 1200 ℃ for 15 min. The SPS profiles were investigated to determine their impact on the resulting microstructures and mechanical properties of the NiAl intermetallics. The obtained results showed that the sample sintered at a higher temperature and a longer dwell time exhibited a higher density and a better microstructure, with a lower amount of porosity. These translated to a higher average hardness value with a smaller scatter due to superior bonding between the atoms associated with more complete diffusion.
