Abstract

The increase in requirement for heat dissipation in thermal management application has led to the development of new techniques. Heat sink with micro pin fin is one of the effective techniques which have attracted the researcher in past two decades. In the present work the performance of un finned Micro channel heat sink (MCHS), heat sink with circular pin fin (CPF) and heat sink with square pin fin (SPF) are numerically analyzed to access the hydrodynamic and heat transfer behavior for Reynolds number ranging between 100 to 900 using water as coolant. Three different cases of heat flux namely uniform, linear and sinusoidal were examined using three dimensional conjugate heat transfer model. According to the results obtained from the present work heat sink with square pin fin and uniform heat flux has higher heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. Furthermore the influence of porous medium on the performance of heat sink were studied. Results reveal that hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics are greatly influenced by size and location of porous medium.
